Hold, ceiling, capture, void, hammer and soft close.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ceiling | The most a bidder may bid. It is the amount PayPal holds. |
| Hold | A PayPal authorization (an order with intent AUTHORIZE) for the ceiling. A promise, not a payment. Nothing is charged. |
| Bid | A price offered within the ceiling. The engine accepts or rejects it and the ledger records it. Bids above the ceiling are blocked. |
| Soft close | A bid near the end extends the lot, so the auction does not end on a last-second bid. |
| Hammer | The moment the lot closes and a winner and winning price are known. |
| Capture | Taking the winning price from the winner's hold, with final_capture. Only the winning price is captured, never the ceiling. |
| Void | Releasing a hold so it is never charged. Every hold except the winner's is voided. |
| Truth read | Asking PayPal what it knows about a hold before acting on it. The saga does this first on every run. |
| Journal | The saga's saved state: what it intends to do and what it has done, so it can resume after a crash. |
